Why teach the Creed and when you were baptized in the early church

For a long time in the life of the Christian Church has occupied and continues to occupy a special place the so-called Symbol of Faith: a relatively brief confession of what the Church believes. The word "symbol" in its original meaning can be translated as: that "holds together, connects, contains." So, the Symbol of Faith precisely contains all these truths in which the Church believes. They are necessary for man, for the fullness of his life, and for salvation from sin and spiritual destruction.

Historically, the Creed has emerged as a catechism for converts, that is, preparing to accept the Mystery of Baptism. In ancient times, adults were baptized mainly. As in our days, people came to faith, accepted Christ, wanted to join the Church, to become members of the church community — each as a result of their own special way. Every meeting of man with God is the secret of God's grace, which is not given to us to penetrate. Some come to God in suffering and sorrow, others in joy and happiness. So it was, always will be.

The Christian life of the new believer began with the fact that he was brought to the bishop of the local church, and he inscribed a hand on the cross on the forehead of the new Christian, as if putting a mark of Christ on it. A man came to God, believed in Christ. Now he must know the contents of faith. He becomes a disciple, he begins, as they say in church books, to announce. Christianity is not an emotion, not just a feeling, no, it is a meeting with Truth, it is a difficult feat of acceptance by its whole being. As a person who passionately loves music, in order to perform it, must go through difficult training, so he who believes in Christ, who loves Christ, must now become aware of the content of his faith and what it obliges.

On the eve of Easter - in the early Church, baptism was performed on Easter night - each person preparing for baptism solemnly read the Symbol of Faith, made a "bestowal" of him, professed his acceptance and his entry into the unity of faith and love. Each large local church — the Roman, Alexandria, and Antioch — had its own baptizing article of faith, and although they were all expressions of a single and inseparable faith, they differed from each other in style and phraseology. At the beginning of the 4th century, great disputes arose in the Church concerning the basic Christian doctrine of Christ as God.In 325, the First Ecumenical Council met in the city of Nicaea. On it was developed a common, uniform for all Christians, the Symbol of Faith. A few decades later, at the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople, the Creed was added to and received the name of Nikke-Tsargrad, common to the whole universal Church. Finally, the Third Ecumenical Council in Ephesus in 431 decided that this Symbol remained forever inviolable, in other words, no further additions should be made to it.

Since then, the universal Creed of Faith has been sung or read in churches at every liturgy. He is the universal, for all the obligatory expression by the Church of his faith. And therefore, anyone who wants to know what the Church believes in, in which our faith, in what the Truth that Christianity brings to the world, findsanswerin the Creed.
