Seven peaks and five poles: about the records of Fedor Konyukhov

30Fyodor Konyukhov turned 65 years old. The distinguished traveler visited both the North and the South Poles, became the first Russian to conquer the seven highest peaks of the world, and the first person in the world to reach all five poles of the planet, including the Pole of relative inaccessibility in the Arctic Ocean, Everest and Cape Horn (pole yachtsmen)! In his personal offset - land and sea expeditions and, of course, the Around the World! About the highlights of the biography of Fyodor Konyukhov - in our review.

North Pole31
Fyodor Konyukhov from childhood dreamed of the sea, dreamed of traveling, and was delighted with the courage and fearlessness of the explorers who set out on the most dangerous expeditions on sailing yachts. Lit up with a dream to repeat their travels, Fyodor Konyukhov in 1977 repeats the route once taken by Vitus Bering. Later on the sailing ship he goes to Kamchatka, to Sakhalin, and to Chukotka.During the expeditions, Konyukhov acquired all the skills for survival in the ice desert: he knew how to build a temporary shelter, deal with extremely low temperatures, ride in a team. Twice Konyukhov came to the North Pole as part of expeditionary groups, and after that he decided on an independent expedition that lasted 72 days and was crowned with success. The independent conquest of the North Pole in 1990 became a precedent in the history of mankind.

South Pole32
Fedor Konyukhov went to Antarctica 5 years later. Being already an experienced traveler, he correctly calculated his strength, and reached the cherished goal on the 59th day. He embodied his impressions of the conquest of the South Pole in the artistic book on Antaktid. In addition, during the expedition, he constantly kept a diary, watching his own state in conditions of low temperature and high pressure. One of Konyukhov’s achievements on this expedition was the conquest of the Vinson massif, the highest point of Antarctica (5140 m). Interestingly, no one has overcome this route before Fyodor Konyukhov, it was believed that it was almost impossible physically. However, the trip to Antarctica was so expensive that Konyukhov decided to climb right after the conquest of the South Pole. The savings were justified: the traveler won not only materially, but he also endured a recovery well, since his body was already acclimatized. True, this expedition was not without incident: because of the bad weather, the helicopter that had flown in to take Konyukhov away could not find the traveler for three days.

Seven peaks of the world33
The route of the seven highest peaks of the world includes Elbrus (Europe), Everest (Asia), Vinson Massif (Antarctica), Akongkagua (South America) and Kilimanjaro Volcano (Africa), the peak Kosciusko (Australia) and McKinley (North America). Five ascents from this list were independent.

World travel
Despite all the "mountain" achievements, the vocation of Fyodor Konyukhov is the sea. In total, he made more than 40 sea expeditions, and even became the world record holder because he managed to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat in 46 days!34

Konyukhov’s maximum voyage lasted 508 days. The traveler, telling about the water routes, emphasizes that the ocean is deserted, and the belief that at the first trouble the rescuers will come to the aid of the ship is false. During the journeys Konyukhov met the ships a few times, and all the rest of the time he remembered only that there was no help waiting for him.36

Konyukhov distinguished himself by the fact that Cape Horn passed five times. It is believed that the independent passage of this cape on the load is equal to the rise on Everest in conditions when the climber is deprived of oxygen. Konyukhov went through the Horn five times, and we hardly ever know what effort it cost him.35

A total of 380 thousand miles traveled on the Konyukhov yacht, which corresponds to the distance between the Moon and the Earth. He cares about the environment - travels on skis, sleds, yachts or boats, as well as cycling or riding a horse or camel. Oceans, ice and mountain ranges have already been conquered by Konyukhov, his new passion is the desert. We are sure that many more discoveries are still waiting for the researcher on this path!
