Advent 2016 lasts 40 days - from November 28 to January 6. Since zagovhenie (the last day when you can eat some food) falls on the day of the memory of the Apostle Philip, the post itself has another name - Filippov.

Fasting precedes the feast of the Nativity of Christ and accordingly prepares a person for this great day when the God-child came into the world. From the Holy Scriptures, we know that the Magi came to look at the Savior who appeared in the world, who brought rich gifts to Jesus - gold, incense and myrrh.

Modern man, too, can bring to Christ the gift according to his own strength - a heart cleansed of sins. Such spiritual catharsis contributes to fasting.

How to eat in the Christmas post?

Even the Christians of the first centuries were fasting before Christmas. Saints of the 4th century recall a fast that lasted for a week at first. But in 1166, officially for the whole Church, the Advent was established in 40 days. How did fasting at the time and how to eat modern people?

You can learn about this in detail from the monastic charter, which has clear instructions on what can be eaten and what should be discarded.

  1. It is forbidden to eat meager food - meat, dairy products, eggs, and at a certain time and fish.
  2. On the most stringent days - Monday, Wednesday and Friday - only thermally processed foods of plant origin, respectively, without oil, are allowed.
  3. On Tuesday and Thursday you can eat boiled food with oil.
  4. On weekends and on the feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary, besides hot food with butter, fish and wine are blessed.
  5. In the last week of Advent, the meal looks even more modest: even on weekends, fish and wine are not allowed.
  6. It should be understood that these regulations are strictly addressed to the monks in the first place. The laity specifically in their cases should consult with the clergy or priests who know them.Reliefs relate primarily to the sick, pregnant women, children and students.

Advent menu

If you are fasting for the first time, be sure to talk with the priest of the temple you go to. He will not only advise you on how to eat, but will give other recommendations for spiritual improvement.

Restricting yourself in food is moderate in order to have enough strength to perform official and household duties. God hardly wants you to give him dizziness and fainting instead of your heart cleansed of passion.

More than just abstaining from skimming food.

You do not fast in order to get into your favorite jeans or for the New Year to wear a dress that has not been sitting on you lately. If your goal is only to lose weight, then how is your post different from diet? Christmas fasting is much more difficult than just abstaining from food. St. John Chrysostom rightly writes:

It is the one who believes that fasting is only in abstaining from food. True fasting is the removal from evil, the curbing of the tongue, the deposition of anger, the taming of lust, the cessation of slander, falsehood and perjury.

Bible on a plate

For a gossiper, 40 days without idle talk will be a painful ordeal. For a lover of entertainment, 7 weeks without secular parties will seem like a serious challenge. And how can an angry person fight consciously with his ardent temper for 40 days? This is also a kind of post. He requires work on himself. And if a person consciously, for the sake of Christ, is ready to work on self-correction, this is the best gift to the God-child.

40 days for spiritual improvement

If in Advent 2016 we only refuse to eat and do not make any effort to change ourselves, then our diet is of no use. Moreover, as it is written in one chant, we are hypocritical and become like demons. Why?

While fasting from brashes, my soul, and not being purified from passions, in vain you rejoice in bad eating, for if you don’t have a desire for correction in you, then you will come to hate from God as a lie, and become like evil demons who never eat.

Priest prays before icons

Each of those who want to fast has several days to analyze their spiritual problems and decide on what it is worth working especially hard on Advent 2016. For one, this will be, in addition to abstaining from food, an intensified fight against Internet addiction, for the other - with its evil language, for the third - with a vulnerable pride. What specifically for you is not for us to decide.

Priest Victor Shevchenko tells about the meaning of the Christmas Fast:

Take it to yourself, tell your friends!
