History of Vazovskaya Niva

History of Vazovskaya Niva.

STORY
Niva is obliged by its appearance to Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin. The latter, visiting the Togliatti auto giant, recommended the designers to develop a four-wheel drive vehicle that would be useful to the military and the villagers. Immediately, work began to boil at the plant - both young and experienced employees rushed to offer their ideas to the chief designer regarding the design of a promising SUV.

The designers were divided into three opposing camps. Moreover, all projects involved the use of the maximum number of "Zhiguli" units. What was offered? The first option is to equip the serial passenger car, "penny", all-wheel drive transmission. According to this principle developed "Moskvich-410". The second option is to build an all-wheel drive car with an open body, spring suspension and all-wheel drive. That was how the UAZ-469 was created. The third option is to lay in the design of the car the maximum number of advanced solutions: front and rear spring suspension, permanent four-wheel drive, lockable center differential ... Fortunately,it was the latter that was supported by the then chief designer of VAZ, Vladimir Solovyov.

The first copies of the car “E2121”, which were released for testing in 1972, turned out to be frankly inconspicuous, for which they received the malicious nickname “crocodiles”. But "Eshki" confirmed the viability of the proposed design. The machine surprised the creators of excellent cross! While the engineers were working on the features of the mechanical filling, the designers proceeded to the matter. At the same time there were open and closed body options. Moreover, Valery Syomushkin was involved in the appearance of the latter, who suggested calling the future car “Niva”. And the exterior, and the name of the SUV, proposed by the young designer, like the leadership of the company.

By the way, such a legend goes about the permanent all-wheel drive "Niva". At first, the designers wanted to make a plug-in four-wheel drive, but the first prototypes that came to the tests quickly returned for revision - the standard "Zhiguli" bridges simply collapsed. Therefore, it was decided to divide the torque between the bridges, thus reducing the load on the bridges and universal joints. It is believed that such a transmission - VAZ innovation. However, well-read motorists will recall that the British proposed the first such solution, creating a Range Rover. However, the use of well-known developments of foreign engineers rather helped Togliatti to create the first in the USSR really comfortable SUV.
But in the barrel of honey, according to Russian tradition, they added a fly in the ointment. The need to use the "Zhiguli" "four-stage" forced the designers to introduce a driveshaft connecting the transfer case and gearbox. This shaft, creating a characteristic noise and vibrations, is the signature mark of the Niva. This is how the famous joke appeared: “The first sign of the Niva designer is deafness.” Another problem is the spare wheel located under the hood. Attach it was simply nowhere: on the body - ugly, under the body - nowhere. The first concerns that the rubber will burn, dispelled after the tests - the wheel was heated to a maximum of 90 ° C. But another problem turned out when the cars were already running along the roads of the USSR. In a frontal collision, the pumped reserve, moving straight into the salon, swept away everything in its path.Alas, this problem has not been solved until now ...

The SUV (or rather, its third experimental series) was sent to state tests in 1974. It differed from the usual “Niv” only in details: “Zhiguli” bumpers, separate sidelights ... In 1977, the car moved to the main conveyor of the Togliatti auto giant. Serial cars were equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, which was somewhat modified "six". The main difference between this engine and its counterparts is the increased revolutions of maximum torque. Hence the characteristic driving style of the “nivovods”, stated in the proverb: “more gas - less holes” In 1994, the VAZ-2121 was upgraded (for example, vertical rear optics appeared), simultaneously changing the index to “VAZ-21213”.

Of course, the Soviet athletes immediately appreciated the novelty of the home car industry: "Niva" repeatedly became the winner of the USSR Championship in autocross. Later, off-road cars attracted foreign riders - the cars took prizes in the famous rally "Paris-Tunisia", "Algeria", "Dakar", "Rally of the Pharaohs", "Atlas" ... The transfer of sporting achievements of the Niva can be continued to infinity. And the Togliatti all-wheel drive vehicles are found on the sports tracks today.
A successful design allowed the Niva to conquer foreign buyers - at one time, 75% of the off-road vehicles produced were exported! Hence the prestigious awards: 1978 - the gold medal of the International Exhibition in Brno, 1980 - the gold medal of the International Fair in Poznan.
