MOSCOW, July 7 - RIA News. The French government made the final decision not to deliver the Mistral helicopter carriers to Russia, despite a large penalty for the failure of the contract. This was announced by French Defense Minister Jean – Yves Le Drian at a press conference in Washington, reports Sputnik.
The French Defense Minister stressed that non-fulfillment of the contract with Russia would cost France $ 1.2 billion, but there is no other way out, he said.
According to the agency, the French Defense Minister recalled that the suspension of the Mistral contract was linked to the position of Russia on the Ukrainian conflict. Due to the fact that the situation with Russia has not changed, the contract cannot be fulfilled, Sputnik quotes Le Drian.
Le Drian also noted that it would be difficult for France to find another buyer for the Mistral because the ships were designed according to Russian requirements.
