Bloody attack. 1941

"A day later we went on the offensive. And it developed at first successfully, albeit with losses. On the eve, we successfully conducted artillery preparation. At that time, the Wehrmacht commanders were still too self-confident. Shelling our positions, they gave out the location of their batteries.
And, I think, out of neglect to us, "Ivan," did not bother to change the position of their artillery. These days a lot for me for the first time. The fire of three-inch guns and a small number of howitzers seemed overwhelming. The explosions thundered continuously, in the enemy positions flames flared, something was burning.
Under the cover of artillery, until the Germans came to their senses, our company managed to crawl to their trenches about fifty meters. But the enemy also fired. The company commander was cut off from the main body of the fighters. The commander took the political officer Kulakov.
The Germans, coming to themselves, increased fire. Next to me was wounded a fighter. Blood was flowing from several wounds through the back. A sergeant poked his face into the ground. Kulakov looked at me: - The mouthpiece is silent. Without him, attack?

The company lay, tensely awaiting the signal to attack.Kulakov, short, chubby, climbs awkwardly, then rose to his full height and shouted in a broken voice: - Attack!
But the company, which suffered the first losses, lay motionless. And the Germans were silent. Only the political instructor trampled, waving the TT. - Fight! he shouted again. It seems hit single shot. Or maybe a short queue. I was too tense and did not understand.
The bullet hit the politruku in the stomach, he fell, but overcoming pain, he rose again. The next bullet hit him in the face, Kulakov was killed on the spot. He was a good political instructor, and in this battle he saw himself as a commissioner, whose duty is to raise a company to the attack. Unfortunately, he lacked the ability to fight.
Now the duties of Komrota temporarily performed by me. As often happens in the most difficult moments, the human brain acts automatically. I commanded loudly and clearly, as if I had passed the test at a military school: - Roth, listen to the command! Prepare grenades. The chain has started to stir, preparing grenades for battle.
Following, no less loudly, I shouted: - Roth, stand up! The team, which taught the fighters to automatism, worked. The soldiers climbed holding rifles with attached bayonets. - Fight!

Together with all I got up.We ran, hurrying to overcome these last tens of meters. Over the field rushed "A .. and ... and .. !!!" We were shot almost at close range.
But a hundred people ran without stopping, also shooting on the move. And this fire was dense, as the armament of the company was mainly SVT. In addition, we were supported from the flanks by machine guns.
And yet, people fell one after another. The soldier in front of me fell flat, another fell, clutching his leg. A machine gun at point-blank cut three, but we already jumped into the trench. It is difficult to describe hand-to-hand fight, especially the first one. I can only recall fragmentary episodes, moments.
Before me stood a strong, tall German in a gray jacket, putting forward a carbine. I have a three-line, the owner of which I studied for several hours a day. Blow - right in the chest.
Pulling out the bayonet began to look through the eyes of another enemy. Probably I should have commanded, and not to look for hand-to-hand. But the battle has already entered a phase where no one heard anyone and chose his goal himself.
Five or six Germans, hiding in the rifle niches, fired quickly. We were lucky that the machine was only one. They managed to kill and injure several soldiers, but they were unable to stop the rest.

People who managed to cross the sweep of the field, left behind their dead comrades, crossed the threshold of fear. At the machine gunner emptied the store, and pinned it to the wall of the trench. Feverishly jerking the bolt, the NCO stood to the last, but was trampled into the ground. The rest were finished off with bayonets.
Two machine gunners turned the machine gun on a tripod along the trench. They were shot from the TT point-blank by one of the commander troops. Despite the injuries they managed to rearrange the machine gun, but they were also dared by the fallen in time soldiers.
Ten of two Germans, jumping over the parapet, retreated. Competently, rushes, covering each other with fire. Behind them, in a hurry, we rushed. The fighter fell on the bullet. I caught another winding: - Where? Shoot from here ...
They missed the time with unsuccessful pursuit, but a few more Germans remained on the field. The rest dived into the gully and disappeared. Although the enemy was knocked out of the trenches and forced to retreat, we also suffered significant losses. I remember a large number of seriously wounded. There were at least two dozen of them.
Those who landed under the machine-gun bursts were wounded at once by several bullets. German MG-34 pierced the body through, crushing bones. I first saw the effect of explosive bullets.Hitting the body promised almost inevitable death. - Well ... got a baptism of fire? - Said the company looking at carts with the wounded.

I remember the village of Krasnoye in the Bryansk region, from which the Germans hijacked all the inhabitants. An old man ran up to us, calling for help: - There! Rather! There, the Germans buried ours! I ran with the men for the old man, and we saw two pairs of bare feet sticking out of the ground. These were young guys of about twenty. The Germans buried them alive upside down.
Those of the Germans, who believe that the Wehrmacht fought honestly, are proud of their veteran past, let them remember this village of Krasnoye. Therefore, we did not call the Germans "soldiers." For us they were fascists, Hans, Fritz - they had no mercy.
During this time, the company commander and deputy commander were killed. A platoon Yusupov was seriously wounded. I was assigned to the company and for two days we covered the now retreating regiment.
But we were able to understand what to beat the Fritz ... "- from the memoirs of Colonel Turov VS (in the 41st lieutenant, commander of the company of the 878th rifle regiment of the 290th rifle division of the 50th army).
